Back in the day/when I was young/I'm not a kid anymore....

Ok so I'm back for reals now....I hope. Today's post is inspired by a recent conversation I had with some friends about growing up, which is something that is harder than it seems. The dialogue made me think about what challenges seemed huge to me when I was 10 or 11, that have shaped the type of person I am today. There were a few things universal elements of growing up that consistently stood out to me, and I want to share.

1. Clothes made the man...
When you reminisce on your childhood, clothes should be the last thing that comes to mind, right? Sike. Particularly in my black childhood, clothes were a calling card for who could afford what, and your (or your parent's) choice of apparel, shoes, and accessories could make or break a young whippersnapper. Since my mom didn't BELIEVE paying for expensive @$$ Jordan's, it goes without saying that I was promptly escorted to the uncool section of the classroom.

2. Everyone is dating...except me :(
I will never forget this: in 3rd grade, I tried to trade the cutest boy in class a package of fruit snacks to be my boyfriend. He took my fruit snacks, and then gave them back. It seemed like everyone was paired off, even in elementary and middle school. There were girls in 5th grade with breasts and guys with deep voices and more facial hair than my granddad. The angst of feeling not "grown", while everyone else is sprouting, can be a lot to bear. Its funny because all the people who over developed in middle school are the same size 12 years later...YIKES!

3. Classic TV and movies
The Little Mermaid? Aladdin? The Lion King? Straight classics. He-Man, Captain Planet, Sailor Moon and the Thundercats, they all made getting up early for school easier to do. Growing older, quality of the shows never seemed to flag. Do you remember Full House, Home Improvement, and praise God, Family Matters?? The 90's did me so right....

LOL. What a decade. Check out this old British Knights commercial (remember how they used to light up?!?!)
